WHAT WE BELIEVE

GOD

God always has been and always will be. He created life and sustains life. He has no equal. He exists in 3 distinct and equal persons: the Father, the Son, and the Spirit.

SCRIPTURE

The Bible is the inspired Word of God, relevant for daily living, and the final authority on all matters of faith.

HUMANITY

Humanity is created in God’s image to have fellowship with God, and yet has fallen and in need of redemption. As a result, humanity is incapable of regaining a right relationship with God through our own efforts.

SALVATION

The blood of Jesus Christ, shed on the cross, provides the sole basis for the forgiveness of sin. The resurrection of Jesus conquered the power of sin and death. Therefore, salvation occurs when people place their faith in the death and resurrection of Christ as sufficient payment for their sin.

PRIESTHOOD OF THE BELIEVER

Each individual follower of Christ can go directly to God without the aid of any intermediary, and can, and should, read and interpret the Bible for him/herself without religious officials dictating what to believe.

BAPTISM

Baptism by immersion is a symbolic act of obedience and worship for a follower of Jesus.

COMMUNION/LORD’S SUPPER

Communion is a symbolic act of obedience and worship for a follower of Jesus. We observe communion once a month.

AUTONOMY OF THE LOCAL CHURCH

University Avenue Baptist Church is an autonomous body of Christ followers, operating through democratic processes under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, and is voluntarily affiliated with Hawaii Pacific Baptist Convention (HPBC) and numerous other partner institutions at the national and global level.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A CHRISTIAN?

A Christian is a disciple (follower) of Jesus.

Disciples of Jesus:

  • Admit their brokenness and need for a Savior and Lord (Romans 3:23)

  • Believe in Jesus, the Holy Son of God (John 14:6, Acts 4:11-12)

  • Confess their faith (trust) in Jesus as their Savior and Lord (Romans 10:9)

  • Daily surrender their life to Jesus to be transformed for His glory (Romans 12:1-2, Galatians 2:20)
